The Jeffers Park ice rink had a major repair to the refrigeration equipment in December. The Lavington Community Association managed financially to pay this expense, but we now struggle with paying the season's operating costs. Should there be another malfunction there are no funds left for repairs and most likely the rink will have to close. Our bottle drive this spring REALLY needs your support to put us back in financial shape to provide ice for next year. The Community Association appreciates your past support and look forward to all the beverage containers you can provide us for the Saturday, March 17th bottle drive. Thank you!

The North Okanagan Valley Gleaners Society, (across from the Duteau Creek Plant) has had a busy year dehydrating donated locally grown vegetables and fruits that would otherwise go to waste. This dehydrated food is then sent through various humanitarian groups to areas of the world where hunger is a daily occurrence. We would like to thank farmers and gardeners in Lumby, Lavington, Coldstream, Vernon and Armstrong that have generously given of their produce. In 2010 we produced 1.2 million servings of soup mix and it was distributed to the poor in several countries: Moldova, Nicaragua, Kenya, Haiti, Uganda, North Korea. By January 2012 we estimate that we will have dehydrated approximately 4 million servings of soup. We operate on volunteer labour, approximately 4 hours per day,Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. until noon. If you would like to come and volunteer some time or even just to have a tour please contact Eileen Nogue at 250-545-1672. Thanks to those of you who have supported us with volunteer time, donations and words of encouragement as we strive to make use of the abundance of food this region produces to help feed the hungry of the world. Check out the Gleaners Used Furniture and Appliance Store (across from the old Baker's Dozen). The sale of donated furniture and appliances goes toward the operating costs of the dehydrating plant.

Campbell's Label Program

Lavington Elementary school will participate inCampbell's Labels for Education program that encourages registered schools to collect labels from eligible Campbell products and redeem them for educational resources ranging from musical instruments and sports equipment to audio-visual and computer equipment.

We are asking everyone in the community – parents, seniors and community groups – to help us to collect labels. All we request is that you save the Campbell product labels that would otherwise end-up in the recycling bin. Labels can be dropped off at the school in the Campbell's Labels for Education bin in the foyer.

Jeffers Park Update

Jeffers Park located on School Road in Lavington has a brand new look. Due to the hard work of a number of community people, donations from companies and help from our local parks and rec organizations Lavington’s outdoor community ice rink should be a busy place for the winter season. Skaters will now be able to put their skates on and off in the new covered shelter that was constructed this spring. The rink and surrounding area will also be a lot cleaner due to the landscaping that took place in the late summer. New turf laid in the front and back of the park has truly made it a beautiful “green” space. Special thanks to: Ben & Bonnie Leibel and Craig Shore of Lavington Turf Farms, for the very generous donation of not only turf, but the delivery, and the expertise of Ben and Craig to get the turf down. Specialty Form & Fab, owned and operated by Ben Leibel did a significant amount of work getting the concrete slab prepared for the shelter and welding the shelter structure. Tolko – Lavington Division donated all of the wood for the shelter. Greater Vernon Services came and helped with irrigation repairs and landscaping. John & Bonnie Crane and Gordy McPherson are to be commended for their commitment to making Jeffers Park the little gem that it is. Jeffers Park is owned and operated by the Lavington Community Association, however, the entire community of Coldstream benefits from this little park with its outdoor skating rink. Mother Nature will let us know when the rink is opening this year!

Lavington’s Remembrance Day Service

A record number attended our service this year in the Lavington Centennial Park. Pastor Dave Bunn did an excellent job as Master of Ceremonies and reminding us of the importance of remembering those who served this country in war time. The Honour Guard parade led by Canadian Forces - Commander Paul Seguna also included the RCMP, and Fire Dept and Mary Thurber on the bagpipes. Chad Bachelder did a great job of operating the PA system and music. Lavington School students sang O’Canada, read the poem In Flanders Fields, greeted the public with programs and laid wreaths on behalf of local business. The primary choir led by Tobi Huggins the music teacher treated us to a song “Singing for Peace”. The Lavington Fire Department provided refreshments and doughnuts after the service.

Children in Panama can not go to school without a uniform. Blaire and Kelsey are going over with her SWBA-Students without Borders group at Kal Secondary School. Their name is “Set for School”.

Remembrance Day Ceremonies

On Friday November 11, a Remembrance Day Service will be held at the Lavington Community Park Cenotaph, Pastor Dave Bunn officiating. Assemble at 10:30 am., service starts at 10:45a.m. Come to remember and honour the past and present Men and Women who served and those who gave their lives for their country and our freedom. The Lavington Firemen will host the annual tea at the fire hall following the ceremonies.

A very successful bottle drive was held on Saturday Sept 24. The credit for this huge success is made possible by the vast support we receive from the Community Residents, Lavington Baptist Church members, Lavington Ladies Work Group and the Lavington Elementary School staff, students and families. Thank You for donating your bottles, helping drive, collect, and sort containers and to those who called in advance with your address so we would not miss your large stash of bottles. Thank You to Interior Freight & Bottle Depot who were very generous in bringing out their big truck for us to load our large collection. Thank you to the two Dave’s & Ashley from the Lavington Fire Department for taking children in the antique fire truck to collect bottles in the subdivision. Please keep saving your bottles and cans for us as we hold a Spring Bottle Drive on the last Saturday in March and a Fall Bottle Drive on the last Saturday in September.

The Lavington Community Association will be having a Fall Bottle Drive on Saturday September 24th, 2011. Donate your bottles and cans for the “Ice Rink Fund Raiser”.

Lavington residents if you are not going to be home and wish to support us. Please leave your donation of bottles out, or they can be dropped off behind the Lavington Fire Hall on the Saturday. If you have been saving bottles for us and want to be sure that we don’t miss you, please call 250-542-5072 or email ediththoreson@gmail.com and leave a message with your address. We will make sure that those on your route will stop.

Volunteers to meet at 8:30 am for map routes, collecting from 9 am to 12 noon. We are meeting behind the Lavington Fire Hall and sorting there, hotdogs and hot chocolate to follow.

Community volunteers are needed for driving, collecting and sorting. Come on out and support the Ice Rink.

Funds raised are for the improvement and maintenance of Jeffers Ice Rink.

REGISTRATION FOR 2011/2012

The Lumby & District Figure Skating Club is taking registrations for the 2011/2012 season. We have professional, qualified coaches for our CanSkate and StarSkate programs. We are very excited about the upcoming season and are offering registrations for the following categories:

· Pre Canskate – for the skater with little or no experience

· CanSkate – for the skater that is ready to work on badges within the Skate Canada program

· StarSkate 1,2,3, - for the skater that is ready to move up to a higher level of figure skating. Private lessons from a coach are available, if desired.

We will be holding a registration/information night on:

at: PAT DUKE ARENA

The coaches will be in attendance to answer any questions.

A great time for families- free hotdogs and cotton candy, horse rides, and lots of inflatable fun. This year we have a new feature called the "Shooting Gallery." You can shoot paintball guns at live targets, including the opportunity to "Shoot your Hubby." All the proceeds from the dunk tank and the shooting gallery will go to support the work of the North Okanagan Gleaners, who are working to provide food for the world's poor, right here in Lavington!
