Lavington Church

 will be holding their regular church service at Lavington Centennial Park on Sunday, September 10 at 10am. They will be sharing their vision for ministry, including ministry to families. All are welcome. Please bring your lawn chair.

Women in Trades Training (WITT)

is funded through the BC Job Fund Agreement to encourage and increase the number of female apprentices in the Province of BC. In the past 8 years we have introduced approximately 900 to trades training. We are here to support women through their trades training and help connect them with employment.

 

WITT will be offering a 12 week exploratory trades program for women called the Gateway to the Building Trades for Women starting in Vernon on April 10, 2017. During this 12 week exploratory trades program, participants are introduced to trades which may include carpentry, welding, plumbing, automotive, and electrical. They build projects individually and as a team. The program also includes OFA1 certification (Occupational First Aid Level 1) and Employment Readiness skills training.

 

We are currently accepting applications for this program and will only be selecting 10 participants for the program.

Spring Bottle

Lavington Community Association will be having a Spring Bottle Drive on Saturday April 8^th /17. Donate your bottles and cans for the "Ice Rink Fund Raiser". Lavington residents if you are not going to be home and wish to support us. Please leave your donation of bottles out by 9 am or they may be missed, or they can be dropped off behind the Lavington Fire Hall on the Saturday. If you have been saving bottles for us and want to be sure that we don't miss you, please call 250-542-5072 or email lavnews@gmail.com and leave a message with your address and we will be sure those on your route will stop by. Volunteers to meet at 8:45 am for map routes, collecting from 9 am to 12 noon. We are meeting behind the Lavington Fire Hall and sorting there, hotdogs and hot chocolate to follow. Community volunteers are needed for driving, collecting and sorting. Come on out and support the fundraiser for the improvement and maintenance of Jeffers Ice Rink.

Registration for 23th Annual Garage Sale

Registration will be held at the Lavington Elementary School in the foyer on Tuesday April 4, Wednesday April 5 and Thursday April 6 between 6:00 and 7:30 pm. Please have ready a list of items you would like to advertise, along with your address. Cost to register is $10.00 and provides you with the balloons to mark your garage sale site, the radio/newspaper advertising and a listing on the local map handouts. Lavington Recreation Spring Soccer program

It's that time of year again - Registration for the Lavington Recreation Spring Soccer program is now open! Groups offered for Preschoolers up to Grade 6/7. Sessions start April 18th, running every Tuesday and Thursday evening, until June 15th. An exciting new change for this year is that we have created a league with Lumby and Cherryville, and will have home and away games (for our Grade2/3 and up groups). MEDIA RELEASE District of Coldstream

 Rotary Club of Kalamalka Vernon to receive Grant

 

The District of Coldstream Finance Committee has recommended Coldstream Council proceed with approving a grant request in the amount of $1,848 to the Rotary Club of Kalamalka Vernon. The Rotary group will use the funds to conduct additional maintenance works at the Kalamalka Lake Lookout in Coldstream. The recommended resolution will appear before Council at their Regular Meeting on February 14.

Why You Should Join Toastmasters?

Twelve years ago my boss suggested that I teach workshops.  I looked at him with fear and simply said no.   You see, I was afraid of speaking in front of a small group, let alone a big group of people.  Back then I was shy and wouldn't say a word to anyone and when I did my heart would begin beating quickly, my face would turn bright red and I would freeze.

Can you relate to this?  Perhaps you are afraid to talk in front of people (audiences or co-workers) or perhaps you would just like to hone your speaking skills.  Speaking during interviews, strata meetings, club meetings, workshops or weddings can make anyone nervous.

Twelve years ago a friend suggested that I attend a Toastmasters meeting.  I bravely attended a few meetings as a guest and I found a friendly, supportive, educational and safe environment.  I joined my local club and over the years I have attended many meetings, practicing my speaking (communication), listening and leadership skills.  Now I teach adult education workshops and compete in Humorous speech contests.  I can speak to people with confidence and my face doesn't turn cherry red anymore (well at least not as often).   I have also gained many life-long friends by attending Toastmasters meetings.

Toastmasters provides me with the opportunity to attend conferences where I pick up tips that help me in my personal and professional life.  Conferences also give us an opportunity to see Toastmasters from around the world compete in speech contests.

Better at Home program

Are you a senior 60+ who lives independently at home but needs some modest help with a few tasks? The North Okanagan Better at Home Program offers transportation, grocery shopping, light housekeeping, minor home repair and light yard work. An exciting new service offering friendly visiting has recently been introduced. Volunteer positions are also available!

Cost is based on what is affordable for the senior.  The program is funded by the Government of BC and managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland.

Supplies to Guatemala

Local Lavington residents, Denis & Eileen Nogue would like to thank everyone who has made a donation, we have raised over $12,000.00. towards the shipping of a 40 foot container with over 1 million servings of donated Gleaners food and medical supplies to Guatemala. The Nogue's will be working with Mision Hispana reachingtheamericas.com  and will be implementing a much needed feeding program at a public school as well as feeding the most vulnerable and poor. Cedar Bridge School

 730 Whitevale Road Lumby, BC V0E 2G7 Press Release New Classrooms at Local Independent School Open Lumby, BC: The official opening of the new classroom building at Cedar Bridge School, on Friday November 18, 2016, at 2 pm, will celebrate the completion of two elementary grades classrooms. Cedar Bridge School will be hosting a simple Celebratory Ribbon Cutting event and Open House as a means of acknowledging and thanking all the trades, volunteers, and financial donors who contributed to bring this classroom into existence. The event will also serve to officially introduce the school, and the new classrooms, to the community and the North Okanagan. This event is open to all who wish to attend. The celebration will include musical performances by the elementary grades. There will be an informal Open House and Social with refreshments after the presentations, where attendees are invited to visit the new classrooms and experience the school. The new building houses two elementary classrooms, that are spatially designed for accommodating active learning, and are lazure painted with age-specific colours to enliven the rooms. Planning for a second classroom building is set to begin in spring of 2017 with the goal of offering grades 1-8 at Cedar Bridge School. Cedar Bridge School has been in operation since 2006, and is operated by The Bridge Educational Society, a registered charity. Since its inception, it has grown from offering only preschool programs to now having a full range of early childhood programs through to Grade 6, with plans to expand through to Grade 8. Situated on an organic farm and nestled into a forest, the school integrates both nature and farm experiences into its Waldorf-inspired curriculum. Remembrance Day Ceremonies

On Friday November 11, a Remembrance Day Service will be held at the Lavington Centennial Park Cenotaph. Assemble at 10:30 am, service starts at 10:45 am. The Lavington Firemen will serve refreshments at the fire hall following the ceremonies. Come to remember and honour the men and women, past and present, who have served. Many who have given their lives for their country and our freedom.
